"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Bush to Give Up $6,000 In Abramoff Contributions

Bush to Give Up $6,000 In Abramoff Contributions

I guess I'm back on this today. I may give the impression at times (hope I don't as I don't intend to), that I condone anyone of these people if they have done anything improper. My gripe is with the media's representation or misrepresentation when it comes to just about anything. Headline "Bush to Give Up $6,000 in Abramoff Contributions." Why is this the headline? Page two of the article mentions that "All but three of the 24 politicians giving up the funds are Republicans." Yet Harry Reid is involved and isn't giving a penny of the $47k in contributions he received back because "Abramoff was a Republican operative, and this is a Republican scandal," said Reid spokesman Jim Manley. "Any effort by Republicans to drag Democrats into this is doomed to failure."

Next to the article is a picture of Reid with no caption included. This is on the first page of the article and second, where the article does finally mention him. Click on the picture to enlarge and there are four shots; Reid, Delay, Blunt and Hastert. Then click on next and none of the pictures are related to the story at all.

58 of the 1,100 words in the article refers to Reid and it's just to pass the above quote on, with no concern or indication that there is a problem with his not returning any funds. I guess returning the money implies impropriety and that is something the senator from Nevada is counting on, along with media more than happy to use in the future.

Why isn't the headline of this article "Reid has No Intention of Shedding Abramoff Linked Contributions?" Do the Post and other media outlets really want to tell it like anything truly is? I don't think so.
