"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

CNN.com - McCain launches harsh broadside at Obama - Feb 7, 2006

No one is going to work with the other side very well. Obama, Reid and the others need the starting point for the negotiations to be their recommended reform. This will allow them to continue to push and tout that this is a Republican scandal. From what we hear, the majority of the "bad boys" are Republican, yet there are a number of Democrats involved, Reid being one of them.

Democrats also would like to keep their little trips they make throughout the year, so expect that to remain on their reform plan.

Bottom line is that this garbage is going on in both parties. These guys get in power and they lose sight of the ball. There is too much money influencing them.

Cutting out earmarks may not ultimately be the right thing, but more transparency and the opportunity to shoot them down would go a long way.
