The president is taking his "guest-worker" stance up another notch.
According to Reuters:
President George W. Bush has long opposed making English the country's national language, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said on Friday, the day after the Senate voted to do so.Reuters noted that opponents to the amendment to make English the national language
He said Bush has instead long supported a concept called "English-Plus," believing that it was good to be proficient in more than one language.
said it could affect the status of some multilingual services offered by government organizations.Yes, I would imagine it would affect the "status" of certain programs; programs that wouldn't be needed anymore. Savings anyone?
And finally, as many know Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid considers it racist.
According to the Merriam Webster on-line dictionary
Main Entry: rac·ismInteresting and disingenuous take on the word racist by Harry, but what's new. We already have English-Plus if one considers the daily misconstruing of our language.
Pronunciation: 'rA-"si-z&m also -"shi-
Function: noun
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination
Why even call it "English-Plus?" Why not just "Plus?" If not English, then what? Assimililation of illegal immigrants is a major concern. A requirement of English usage and enforcing it would work wonders in that direction.
