"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Immigration Bill Dead ?

It's interesting how often politicians pay lip service to an issue. I wholeheartedly agree that this is an election year (well that's obvious) full of the usual stances and promises. These days though the pols seem to be getting worse as far as following through. I'll believe it when I see it.

If we do get stabbed, this whole fight of ours cannot stop and the effort will need to ramp up, making a stink all over.

Cross posted from InMuscatine:

I say it is not dead. Someone prove me wrong.

GOP leaders: No immigration bill this year on Yahoo! News:

In a defeat for President Bush, Republican congressional leaders said Tuesday that broad immigration legislation is all but doomed for the year, a victim of election-year concerns in the House and conservatives' implacable opposition to
citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.

"Our number one priority is to secure the border, and right now I haven't heard a lot of pressure to have a path to citizenship," said Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., announcing plans for an unusual series of hearings to begin in August on Senate-passed immigration legislation.
Don't celebrate just yet... pay attention to the wording -

THIS YEAR.

Next year isn't an election year, is it kiddies? Mark well my words - prepare to be stabbed
in the back by the Republican Party once the election is over and your congress-critter is
secure in the knowledge he will not have to face your wrath for 2 years, if at all.

IF the Republicans want my vote this year, they will have to pledge to me in no uncertain
terms :

NO AMNESTY.

EVER.

FOR ANY REASON.

AT ANY TIME.

SO HELP ME, GOD.

And that's just what it will take to get me to consider not voting Democratic. If you
really want to earn my vote make being an illegal alien a felony, just like it is
in Mexico.

That just might - just might, mind you - buy my allegiance in the 2008 Presidential Race.
If you choose to stab me - and the country - in the back, then kiss 2008 good-bye.
