"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

One State Goes Soft on Illegal Aliens and Another Cracks Down

Cross posted from The Uncooperative Blogger:

From The Boston Globe:

Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly said yesterday it is not his responsibility to crack down on Massachusetts employers that hire undocumented immigrants, and he said he will continue his policy of taking no action against the companies.

In 2001, Reilly established a policy, saying his office would aggressively fight for the rights and wages of immigrant workers, legal or not, and promise not to report them to federal authorities.

He also said he would enforce wage and labor laws against companies, but not act against them for employing undocumented immigrants.

Yesterday he stood by that, even as a Globe story Sunday reported that undocumented immigrants were receiving wages from contractors on state-funded projects.

“In terms of immigration policy, that is the responsibility of the federal government, not the responsibility of the state government,” Reilly said.

But Reilly is facing intense criticism for not doing more, from Republicans, labor leaders, and immigration-control advocates.

They said Reilly should report the companies to federal authorities and maintain a public list of firms that have used undocumented workers so government agencies and others can avoid using the companies.

Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey , who, like Reilly, is a candidate for governor this year, said yesterday that the attorney general’s approach “has set the wrong tone in the Commonwealth.”

“There hasn’t been adequate oversight in the past,” said Healey, a Republican. “. . . In fact, the attorney general has had the practice of actually working on behalf of illegal immigrants rather than fining the employers who have hired these individuals. It’s the wrong priority.”

Is there some kind of defective gene that makes people fall in love with Illegal aliens? What part of illegal don’t people get? They purposely deny the fact that they are illegal by calling them “undocumented.” Giving people a nice name does not change the facts, they are here ILLEGALLY and if you are the Attorney General you prosecute people that break the law; simple. The least he can do is inform the federal government.

Meanwhile…

From the Washington Times:

With tensions rising and the police department and municipal budget stretched thin, Hazleton is about to embark on one of the toughest crackdowns on illegal aliens anywhere in the United States.

Last week, the mayor of this former coal town introduced — and the City Council tentatively approved — a measure that would revoke the business licenses of companies that employ illegal aliens, impose $1,000 fines on landlords who rent to illegal aliens and make English the official language of the city.

“Illegal immigrants are destroying the city,” said Mayor Louis Barletta, a Republican. “I don’t want them here, period.”

Mr. Barletta said he had no choice but to act after two illegal aliens from the Dominican Republic were charged last month with shooting and killing a 29-year-old man. Other recent incidents involving illegal aliens have rattled this city 80 miles northwest of Philadelphia, including the arrest of a 14-year-old boy for firing a gun at a playground.

“This is crazy,” the mayor said. “People are afraid to walk the streets. There’s going to be law and order back in Hazleton, and I’m going to use every tool I possibly can.”

The City Council, which approved the measure in a 4-1 vote, must vote on it twice more before it can become law. The next vote is scheduled for mid-July.

When Mr. Barletta took office in 2000, Hispanics represented about 5 percent of the city’s population of 23,000. The population has since shot up to 31,000, with Hispanics now representing 30 percent, lured to Hazleton by cheap housing, a lower cost of living and jobs in nearby plants, factories and farms.

City officials do not know how many of the new arrivals are in the United States illegally, but say they are fueling the drug trade, joining gangs and committing other crimes.

This is more like it! This is what we need to see more of in this country. Enough of this idiotic, touchy-feely, they are all just hard working good people. They have invaded our country and broken our laws, so they are not good people.

Oh, but they just want a better life for themselves and their families. So do drug dealers, what’s your point?

Oh, you know you would do the same thing if you were in their place. No, I would not invade qa neighboring country because my country is screwed up. No, I would not march in the streets of said country demanding something I am not entitled to. I would march in the streets of Mexico, I would fight to improve my country. That is what a citizen does, it does not run away, which is exactly what thesae people did. They are weak people with no spine so why do you want them in this country? Most of them have no love for this country or our way of life. Want proof? Why do so many of them not speak English? Why in some places in this country do you need to speak spanish to get a job?

Although the majority of illegal aliens are hispanic, and Mexican, there are illegal aliens in this country that are not hispanic or from Mexico. I want them gone as well. I want them all gone!

No we do not have to deport 12 million people to get rid of them.

  • Secure the border by any means necessary. This includes the Military.
  • Stiff penalties for employers, which are actually enforced.
  • No taxpayer funded programs for illegals or their families. (including school for children of illegals and non-emergency medical care for any illegal)
  • No “Anchor Babies” (no automatic citizenship for children of illegals born in the US)
  • No path to Citizenship in any name or form for those here illegally.
  • No Guest worker program until the above measures are put in place and the need can be PROVEN
  • English only education and the official language of the USA

That will get the job done. They will just leave and no others will want to come here. I am sick of the hand wringing and whining over this issue; grow a spine.

DeMediacratic Nation reports:

Despite a federal effort to enlist help from local police to catch illegal immigrants, some of the USA’s biggest cities are declining to enforce immigration laws.

Police chiefs, mayors and city councils are ordering local cops not to get involved as federal agents crack down on people in the country illegally.

It just makes me sick…
