"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Senators work to secure border

"You come to this country, you have to come legally. If you break the law, you should be held accountable, I think it's long overdue. We need to patch that hole." - Spc Carlos Rodriguez, Tennessee National Guard, born in Puerto Rico.

"I think people are coming to the realization that you cannot have comprehensive reform of immigration without comprehensive security of the border first" - Senator Johnny Isakson, R (GA)
Isakson's amendment to the House border security bill that passed in December, was defeated. The amendment would have required funding of security and that it be operational prior to other portions of the immigration bill were implemented.

I've got to assume the senator is talking about politicians and not "we" as the "people." We're not stupid on this subject so don't lump us in with the pols; they're the ones that have been struggling with the reality that they're supposed to do what "we" want.

Isakson, Lamar Alexander, R (TN); Jeff Sessions, R (AL); and Saxby Chambliss, R (GA) are aggressively behind a "security first" immigration bill, and feel that senators that backed a comprehensive immigration bill are "re-evaluating their positions," due to constituents doubting congress' committment to securing the border." ????I wonder why their doubted????

Bottom line, it is beginning to sound like some eyes may be starting to open....as Senator Chambliss said regarding the linking of citizenship pathway to border security; "That is simply the wrong prioritization of the issues involved in immigration reform. We need to move back to the basics of securing the border before we institute a temporary worker program."
