"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Lieberman, G-8 and Iran

"If there's any hope of the Iranians living according to the international rule of law and stopping, for instance, their nuclear weapons development, we can't just talk to them." – Senator Joe Lieberman, D-Conn (regarding the D, good reporting CBS)

In an interview with Bob Schieffer on CBS’ Face the Nation, Independent Senator from Connecticut Joe Lieberman said something that needs to be and rightly should be part of the diplomatic efforts with Iran regarding its nuclear research for nuclear weapons of peace, its interference in Iraq, its interference with Israel and Palestine and its overall belligerence:

‘"I think we've got to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq." And to me, that would include a strike into... over the border into Iran, where we have good evidence that they have a base at which they are training these people coming back into Iraq to kill our soldiers."’

‘"I think you could probably do a lot of it from the air, but they can't believe that they have immunity for training and equipping people to come in and kill Americans."’

‘"We can tell them we want them to stop that, but if there's any hope of the Iranians living according to the international rule of law and stopping, for instance, their nuclear weapons development, we can't just talk to them," Lieberman said. "If they don't play by the rules, we've got to use our force, and to me that would include taking military action to stop them from doing what they're doing."’

Group of 8 “will support adopting further measures" if Iran refuses to put a halt to its uranium enrichment program.

Also from CBS is news that:

“The Group of Eight countries said Friday that they "will support adopting further measures" if Iran refuses to put a halt to its uranium enrichment program.”

“G-8 leaders said they will back U.N. Security Council moves on a third set of sanctions against Iran if Tehran fails to suspend enriching uranium, a process that can produce fuel for civilian energy — or fissile material for a bomb.”

For a two letter word “if” appears in time space to be infinite.

From Iran

In continuing its efforts to paint the suggested missile bases set up in Eastern Europe as against Russia and China; Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini indicated and said:

“the US has planned to establish missile bases in Europe to forge security dominance over the region.”

‘"The US plan aims to deal with the Russian and Chinese missile capability."’

If missiles are fired at or Iran is attacked from neighboring nations, Iranian parliament speaker Gholam Ali Hadad Adel:

‘"We rule out the possibility that our neighbours... will allow the United States to use their territory in attacking Iran."’

‘"But if this actually happens, we will be forced to defend ourselves... We will target those bases or points."’

If Iran were attacked and it responded they definitely would not like the talk that follows as it would not be as easily manipulated as it has been to date.

Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr’s two cents on the subject?:

"The U.S. may initiate a devilish act, but continuing and ending that event would certainly be out of its control; all U.S. bases in the region" are "within the range" of Iran's weapons.”

And Irans……
