"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Alberto and Reno

UPDATE of Sorts: Richard Jewell, Olympic security guard accused of, yet vindicated of being the 1996 Atlanta Oympics bomber has died. The record of his death is appropriate to this post as his case was one that Attorney General Janet Reno presided over; her Justice Department leaked his name to the media.

The Left can become so obsessed with civil rights especially when it comes to just about anything forwarded by the Bush Administration; walking the fine line between protecting the citizens of this country and honoring our civil rights is the tricky wicket that makes it so. Concerns about our rights should be up there, but not in such the partisan manner of scoring political points to our detriment.

One of the tools the administration is the Attorney General and it has been apparent for some time now that he is quite the “tool.” One of his many failings could be as Jonah Goldberg sets forth at NRO is/was hismawkishness:”

‘“Even my worst days as attorney general have been better than my father’s best days.”’

One doesn’t want to begrudge Alberto Gonzales a brief, self-indulgent moment of mawkishness as he ignominiously departs the public stage. But one of his main problems was that mawkish self-indulgence was often his defining contribution to the public debate.”

Ultimately he performed his job like a fish out of water.

The Democrats have had a field day with this sweaty palmed seeming milquetoast; just the type of target a bully adores, so they shouldn’t get off too easily either although they do and will receive that free pass from their mendacious msm and Ann Coulter is just what the doctor ordered:

“Right-wingers like me never trusted Gonzales. But watching Hillary Rodham Clinton literally applaud the announcement of Gonzales' resignation on Monday was more than any human being should have to bear. Liberals' hysteria about Gonzales was surpassed only by their hysteria about his predecessor, John Ashcroft. (Also their hysteria about Bush, Rove, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Libby, Rice, Barney and so on. They're very excitable, these Democrats.)

Liberals want to return the office to the glory years of Attorney General Janet Reno!

There is reason to believe Reno is precisely the sort of attorney general that Hillary would nominate, since Reno was widely assumed to be Hillary's pick at the time.”

AG Gonzales to Release NSA Program Details

    From the NY Times:

“Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Wednesday he will turn over secret documents detailing the government's domestic spying program, ending a two-week standoff with the Senate Judiciary Committee over surveillance targeting terror suspects.”

“The records will be given to Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and the panel's top Republican, Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who two weeks ago lambasted Gonzales for refusing to turn over documents that even the FISA Court's presiding judge had no objection to releasing.”

“The documents also will be available to lawmakers and staffers on the House and Senate intelligence committees. These people already were cleared to receive details about the controversial spy program.”

How long will it take for details of this to leak? Weeks, days, minutes, seconds……?

For those of us that have no idea what this is all about, the NY Times provides the much necessary details:

“The program, which a federal judge last August declared unconstitutional, monitors phone calls and e-mails between the United States and other countries when such a link is suspected.”

Oops, sorry, my bad….it would appear the “Paper of Record” is becoming a forgetful “gray old lady,” and is missing some records/detail….

Judge in question: Anna Diggs Taylor, 6th Circuit

CNN story regarding Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruling (sorry about the weak source): “NSA eavesdropping program ruled unconstitutional” – August 17, 2006

Powerline reaction to Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruling – August 18, 2006

Almost forgot, the NY Times has a hyperlink to the Rightwing Nazi Arlen Specter, but not the “ever even keeled, middle of the road, likely multi-tasks as well as Nan, gee this country needs more like him,” so here t’is Patrick Leahy.
