"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Iranian Nukes and Hostages for Peaceful Purposes

Iran has a unique way of dealing with the West. The leadership there or Tehran Tehrrorists take hostages; in 1979 it was during the Iranian Revolution that 53 Americans were taken hostage. In the very recent past it was 15 British Navy and Royal Marines.

Now over the course of a few months the Iranians have taken further hostages:

“Haleh Esfandiari of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

From the Statement of her Arrest from the Center for Scholars (very interesting and worth a read): “Haleh Esfandiari, director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and a dual Iranian-American national, was arrested in Tehran on May 8 and incarcerated in the Evin Prison.”

Kian Tajbakhsh, consultant for the Open Society Institute

Statement from the Open Society Institute regarding the detention of Dr. Tajbakhsh in Iran on or about May 11th.

Parnaz Azima (From April 16, 2007: Parnaz Azima, a reporter for Radio Farda – Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (Persian service), on a trip to Iran to visit a sick relative had her Iranian passport seized by Iranian authorities who “have failed to return it to her, it said. It was not clear what the reason was. The statement said Azima was once asked to cooperate with Iran's intelligence services, which she refused.

More on Ms. Azima at RadioFreeEurope RadioLiberty

On her way to Europe, Secretary of State Rice said:

“she did not see a link between the charges against the three Americans and the fate of five Iranian Revolutionary Guard members detained by U.S. troops in January in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil.”

Huh, what? Was this statement in response to a question from the media? What does this have to do with the price of eggs?

Of further interest is the fact that the hostages appear to have been lured to Iran due to sick relatives. Were any of these family members in fact ill?

The hostages are a boon to Iran. Regardless of guilt or innocence the Tehran Tehrrorists have their PR pawns. To us they are innocent civilians; to Iran they are guilty regardless of reality.

How will this hostage crisis play out? What concessions, if any will Iran receive? Will President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad offer them as gifts to the U.S. as he did the “15 victims of a misunderstanding?

Iran is doing what it does best; playing games that will gain it prestige in its part of the world. If it can convince enough people of its power at the way it tweaks the U.S.’ nose, continuing to flaunt and taunt as Iraq’s Saddam Hussein did; it will likely succeed in unifying the Islamic world under its leadership. As Majlis Speaker Gholan-AliHaddad-Adel stressed yesterday; “Islamic unity and coherence as the most important need of the Islamic world.”

‘"Scientific cooperation between Islamic countries is among the needs of the Islamic world... Muslims have always played an effective and great role in promoting medical sciences.”’

Off the subject of hostages in word only; Iran repeated its “readiness” to talk about their peaceful nuclear research on their terms:

Iran on Wednesday voiced readiness to hold talks without any precondition to remove concerns of the other side.

Secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani made the remark while speaking to reporters prior to his departure to
Spain.

Larijani is to hold talks with the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Madrid on Thursday. “

Always willing to talk, yet the West never takes this olive branch. The hostages are further proof that the West, led by the U.S. has imperialist intentions in the Middle East. The United States of America is the Great Satan; the Islamic Republic of Iran will protect you against this vile threat.

Iran’s playing the game, when are we going to realize time is ticking away?
