"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

High Gas Prices Overshadowing Illegal Immigration

The price of gas is always going to be an issue until some other form of energy/altervative fuel is developed and made economical. I don't like gas prices rising as much as the next person, however, it's still a lot less expensive than it is elsewhere in the world; excluding Saudi Arabia and places like that.

The situation we face with the gas prices these days owes itself to inaction and/or inappropriate action on the part of our politicians....sounds an awful lot like our borders and non-enforcement of the laws on the books.

Cross posted from Right Truth

As I listened to the news today, I realized that the illegal immigration issue is being pushed to the back burner and replaced with the high gasoline prices. This is truly shameful. Gas prices go up and down and we will deal with this hike just like we have in the past. But if we do not draft and pass the right immigration bill in the next few weeks, we will be paying the price for all these illegals for decades.

I really get tired of people blaming individuals who drive SUV's. For one thing, SUV's are no different than pick-up trucks. They are built on the same frames, have the same tires, have the same engines. You don't hear anyone griping about guys and their pick-up trucks, do you? Nope. And do any of these gripers stop to think that there may be a reason people purchase an SUV, other than the fact that they are safer for their occupants?

Most people who spend the extra money for an SUV NEED that SUV. They need the extra space to carry more people/kids/dogs/ whatever. They need the extra space for hauling products like 4 X 8 sheets of plywood, building supplies, gardening supplies, whatever. Or perhaps they NEED a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get around on icy, hilly roads.

In fact an SUV is BETTER than a pick-up truck, because you can get as much or more in the back of othe SUV than you can in the back of a pick-up. Plus you have the advantage of whatever you haul staying dry and clean, as opposed to a a pick-up.

So before anyone goes trying to blame the high gas prices on people who drive something bigger than a VW Bug, stop and think that there is a reason they need those SUV's. I can get 8 people comfortably in my Dodge Durango. It has the mid-size engine and gets great mileage for an SUV. I feel safe when driving it and my passengers feel safe. It also has 4 wheel drive. I wouldn't trade it for anything because it serves a usesful purpose for me.

If experts can build a vehicle the size of my Durango, that will hold the same number of people and cargo, that has 4 wheel drive, that runs on sawgrass or corn fuels, great! But I'm not holding my breath.

Now, let's get back to fighting criminal invaders!
