"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Mexico, other nations condemn U.S. fence

Be sure to visit Pet's Garden for a few choice words for Vinny.

CNN reports that:

In a joint news conference in Mexico City late Thursday, the foreign ministers of Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Mexico said that building barriers was not the way to solve problems between neighboring nations.

Honduran Foreign Minister Milton Jimenez said he expected several South American and Caribbean countries to join Mexico and the Central Americans in issuing a joint declaration on the matter soon.

Some quotations of interest from the CNN article:

"The position of Mexico and the other countries is that walls will not make a difference in terms of the solution to the migration problem," - Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez

"All of us are looking for a comprehensive migratory regulation so that millions of Latin Americans can continue working in and supporting the United States economy," - Guatemalan Foreign Minister Jorge Briz

"Building walls, constructing barriers on the border does not offer an efficient solution in a relationship of friends, neighbors and partners. We will go on defending the rights of our countrymen without rest or respite. With passion we will demand the full respect of their human rights,” - Mexican President Vicente Fox

"I had to leave my three children, walk for three days in the desert, and now I'm here with more debts than ever. Now I have to work in the United States to pay my debts from the trip." - Edith Martinez, a 40-year-old from Oaxaca who walked back over the border bridge to the Mexican town of Nogales

WOW, what's up here? Do I need to touch on the quotes at all to point out how sad they are? What are we talking about here? They're scared to death that their virtual trash can may be sealed up. Things tough at home? Push a bunch North.

Don't forget Pet has a few words on this oddity:

Mexico’s President Fox has unsurprisingly joined into a chorus of criticism over the proposals in the U.S. Congress to extend and fortify border fences. while he is building plans to sue the United States Of America for protecting our borders.
