Rather than wait for the Congress to act, yet another call for a government entity to act is suggested.
Phyllis Schlafly, president of the Eagle Forum, attending one of about 12 hearings on immigration reform, yesterday called upon the state of Missouri to get moving, saying:
"Missouri should act now before we have to face the reality of the problems other states have" with large numbers of illegal immigrants, such as California, Texas and Arizona."Additionally, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
"Many states are taking up the issue; and Georgia and Colorado recently passed controversial legislation that, among other things, aims to trim illegal immigrants' use of public services. About 540 immigration-related bills were introduced in state legislatures this year, twice as many as last year."
"She wants to see state legislation that would deny illegal immigrants access to state benefits and public scholarships to college. The law should also heavily sanction employers who hire undocumented workers and require law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of everyone they arrest."'Hurray, that's what I'm talking about,' you say....well of course there were opposing poo pooers in attendance, that called for holding off and leaving it to the Congress and prognosticated "against a confusing patchwork of state laws." Which of course is a problem, but how else to get the politicians off their *sses? Opposition would have us wait on these slackers; which has in a sense gotten us where we are today. Yes, let's wait even longer to allow for the problem to worsen.
Why, even the director of a school that teaches English As A Second Language in Kansas City spoke in favor of waiting by saying:
(children?) "Congress will act. Let's simmer down."It would appear the school hasn't fully made the transition to the new preferred terminology of English Language Learners or ELL and doesn't want to see all that money go down the drain for worthless letterhead.
Ruth Ehresman, with the Missouri Budget Project:
disputed the idea that illegal immigrants are a drain on the state's education and health care systems. She said a recent study shows that an estimated 35,000 to 65,000 undocumented people in Missouri pay between $29 million and $57 million a year in sales, property and income taxes.Oh, a study.... ok....looks like it's time to process some refunds and send someone on their way. Why, they can even pay their own way.
The Post-Dispatch further elucidates:
They are ineligible for the state's Medicaid program, subsidized child care, temporary cash assistance and housing assistance. Only one-sixth of that number are children, which cost about $7,500 a year to educate. And adds Ehresman:
"They contribute $20 to $30 million more in taxes than they actually use."And those are estimates based upon estimates that you can estimate on.
