"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Times Quotes of the Year: some of them anyway...

Visiting the cop-out cover story from Time Magazine's recent issue; Time's quotes of the year caught my eye.

From Time Magazine:

"The Palestinians gave their vote to the party that gave its blood." — Ayyoub Muhanna A Lebanese shop owner, celebrating the militant group Hamas' surprise landslide victory in the Palestinian parliamentary elections
Yes, let's remember that ok?
"The world policy on Sudan is failing. If we turn our heads and look away ... an entire generation will die." - George Clooney regarding Darfur
Calling for us to do what he didn't and doesn't want us doing in Iraq; do we dare? would he approve?
"This country needs us. We are the strong arms that do all the tough jobs." - Donna Maria Mostache An illegal immigrant, who marched alongside hundreds of thousands of others in Los Angeles as part of a nationwide show of economic clout designed to prove immigrants' value to their adopted homeland and pressure Congress for reforms
Right in front of your very eyes...."an illegal immigrant" and Time changes it to "prove immigrants' value..." That's part of the problem, Time doesn't distinguish "legal" from "illegal" which is part of the reason the debate gets nowhere.
"About historical events, there are different views." — Mahmoud Ahmadenijad
The Iranian president defending his views that the Nazi Holocaust was a myth.
A good reason not believe anything out of his mouth....
"The American people have resoundingly called for a New Direction. It is imperative that we waste no time in addressing the pressing needs facing our nation." — Nancy Pelosi The incoming House speaker, in a statement outlining her goals for the beginning of her leadership of the 110th Congress.
Just not the direction you assume Nanc
"I am not planning on running for President. I'm not trying to be coy. I kind of fell out of love with the political process." — Al Gore asked about possibly making another run for the presidency
Propaganda is much easier from the outside
"NSA did not target Princess Diana's communications." — National Security Agency in a rare public comment on intelligence operations, denying reports that Princess Diana was the target of any monitoring
Quote them as denying it....it appears more dishonest that way
"When [America] appears to abandon its own ideals and objectives, its friends abroad are naturally troubled and confused." — Secretary-General Kofi Annan the outgoing United Nations leader, in a farewell speech that delivered tough criticism of President Bush's foreign policy.
That's what happens when the light goes on. Suddenly you realize the way the international community goes about remedying things just doesn't work. So you switch tactics, which could make headway; but the international community doesn't really know how to do anything but talk.

"These types of derogatory remarks have consequences beyond the stupidity of the person who made them. " — John Liu the New York city councilman, blasting Rosie O'Donnell's on-air mimicking of the Chinese language in a letter to The View host and producer Barbara Walters.

How many feet does Rosie have for that big mouth of hers? Sounds kind of racist, no?

"We've now heard from the Iraq Study Group, but we need the White House to become the Iraq Results Group." — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton responding to the Iraq Study Group's recommendations

One of the few that hasn't been clued in on the fact the ISG report was pretty much a waste of time.

"The $64,000 question is now on the table: is the President ready for a change of course? All eyes now are on this President." — Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) on the Iraq Study Group report

Why is he standing alone staring at the president? Hey Chuck, did you happen to hear reaction from the Left and Right?

"It is a report to solve American problems, not to solve Iraq's problems" — Ayad al-Sammarai an influential Sunni Muslim politician, on the Iraq Study Group report
The irony is that it won't solve American problems either....

Nothing special here, just wanted to share some of the quotes - they tend to be neither here nor there, but so is Time.

But there is something special here.....Visit Rightwing Guy for his post entitled, "North Korea Wants Sanctions Lifted." Yeah, ok....that has a familiar sound to it, doesn't it?
