"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

New Hope for Immigration Reform? Hope for Anything?

So wonders Tom Brune of Newsday, however:

"The clock starts ticking today, but congressional Democrats left immigration off their initial list of priorities."
How unserious can the new majority be?
"the House, focused on Speaker Nancy Pelosi's 100-hour agenda, is still formulating its approach."
Odd that they have so many stands and things to say, but when it gets right down to it they're still working on what they believe.

John Gay, co-chairman of the business-backed Essential Worker Immigration Coalition believes:
"We have the best chance we've had in the seven years that I've been working on this issue."
I may be on the other side of the issue than John Gay, but seven years and now there is a "maybe?"
***In an aside, EWIC participates actively in one of my pet peeves; that being the manipulation of language, as they are concerned about "both skilled and lesser skilled ("essential worker") labor." This is a new one that I need to add to my Newspeak dictionary***
Regardless of time spent working on any issue, it always boils down to a rush it through, which will resolve nothing and only exasperate the problem. We get hit on 9/11, create DHS amid demands to do so; FEMA is put under DHS and trips up during Katrina, switch it up again. Voting fraud? Pass the "Help America Vote Act of 2002," poor Federal money into "paperless" voting machines only to result in demands for the old way, how about some more money for that?

This is how issues are resolved in Washington. Polls, Lobbyists, Consultants tell politicians what it is we Americans believe and want. Whatever we get from them, we'll be fixing it soon enough again.
