"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Rep. Gutierrez Proposes Citizenship Effort

Rather than having protests across the country, we can have new Democratic voter, I mean citizenship workshops across the country - Blandly Urbane
Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois would like us to believe this is to capitalize on the "success" of recent rallies, however, I think more likely is his hope to capitalize on some new voters. Gutierrez says recent immigration marches around the country were successful and as an example he referenced Chicago where 400k+ protested with no reports of arrests.

If this is the new standard of "success," I've got a few things that I would like.......

From the Baltimore Sun:
To capitalize on the success of recent immigration rallies, one immigration reform leader in Congress proposes establishing workshops across the country to help 8 million permanent residents become U.S. citizens.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., in an interview with the Associated Press, called for a National Citizenship Day to be held July 1 in an effort to educate immigrants on the best way to proceed with citizenship. The goal is to set up workshops across the country on the weekend before the Fourth of July.

"Instead of marches in 50, 60, 70 cities, we're going to set up citizenship workshops in 50, 60 70 cities," Gutierrez said.

The Democrat praised recent immigration marches around the country as successful and specifically pointed to the Chicago march where police said 400,000 participated and no arrests were reported.
