"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

Church leaders speak out against immigration sweeps...

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Leaders of four different religious faiths spoke out Wednesday near Santa Cruz on behalf of families of scores of immigration violators deported last week as controversy continued over federal immigration sweeps that have netted thousands of people since May.

The 107 arrests in near Watsonville, Santa Cruz and Hollister last week were part of a new crackdown on illegal immigration by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In Operation Return to Sender, federal authorities have arrested 24,000 people nationally, 2,000 of them in Northern California, and deported 6,800 people.

"Scores of immigration violators," that's a good thing to call it now; granted it is a violation, but it is breaking the law, which is illegal. Can a murderers act honestly be described as just a "violation?" I don't think so, people would be up in arms over something like that. Unfortunately when language like this is used we are not talking about the same subject and until those in support of illegal immigration start speaking honestly and about the subject we will not resolve the issue.

One fifth of those picked up in Northern California have criminal records - what do the church leaders think of that?

Deputy Director of I.C.E. in San Francisco, Timothy Aitken said:
"We're trying to put integrity back in the immigration process. You need to comply with the law, or you may find someone knocking at your door and you'll get deported."
Not a difficult concept to grasp you would think, but then again....

More from the church fellas:
The religious leaders who spoke out Wednesday acknowledged that the government has a right to enforce immigration law. But they said enforcement can tear apart families in which some members are illegal and others are U.S. citizens.
Um, it's not the enforcement that can break up a family if there was no "violation" to begin with. This obviously requires a change so that you are not automatically a citizen if born here under these circumstances.

Roman Catholic Bishop Sylvester Ryan at a press conference said:
"It is clear that we have reached a point where we need legislation that will produce a viable path to citizenship for undocumented persons residing in our nation and one (law) that protects the integrity of families and the safety of children,"
The integrity of the family can be protected by following the law and if you do not receive automatic citizenship at birth; guess what - EVERYONE GETS TO LEAVE TOGETHER. As to the citizenship of the "UNDOCUMENTED VIOLATORS" they already have citizenship, just not here.

San Fran
immigration attorney, Stacy Tolchin who felt the operation was more aggressive in the past said:
"Don't deport them the same day. Give them access to counsel. You're ripping them away from their families. It's really malicious."
Give them access to counsel because I as well as other attorneys need to earn a living and help "Violators," get away with their "infraction." "Malicious,"
Malicious is defined by Webster as "given to, marked by, or arising from malice <malicious gossip>." And "malice" is defined as: "1 : desire to cause pain, injury, or distress to another
2 : intent to commit an unlawful act or cause harm without legal justification or excuse."
So I guess it all depends upon what the meaning of "is" is.

I've had enough of this one kids as it gets sillier and sillier as I go along. Bottom line: until we start talking about the same thing.....
