"How did it come to pass that an opposition's measure of a president's foreign policy was all or nothing, success or "failure"? The answer is that the political absolutism now normal in Washington arrived at the moment--Nov. 7, 2000--that our politics subordinated even a war against terror to seizing the office of the presidency." - Daniel Henninger - WSJ 11/18/05

First Annual International Day of Non-Violence – Oct 2, 2007

Addressing the UN General Assembly in its first observance of “International Day of Non-Violence, Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki-moon said:

“The message of Mahatma Gandhi, whose peaceful struggle helped birth an independent India and inspired countless people around the world, is needed now more than ever amid rising global tensions, intolerance and conflict.”

According to UN reporting:

India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr. Anand Sharma, said that the wide and diverse sponsorship of the resolution was a reflection of the universal respect for Mahatma Gandhi and of the enduring relevance of his philosophy.”

Yeah, that and this is what the UN does, right….much easier than action; but to the UN this is action! Feel Good!!!!!

Quoting Mahatma Ghandi with whom the day is to honor from that paragon of all things peaceful, Iran:

"Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man"

Please note: this is not to be confused with International Qods Day even though this particular reporting comes from IRNA

On the subject of International Qods Day (mark your calendars, 10/5/07), more remarks from participants in the Islamic Republic.

From Secretary General of the Society of Jame Rouhaniyat-e-Mobarez (JRM), the Ayatollah Mohammad-Reza mahdavi-Kani noted that:

“sixty years of bloodshed in Palestine proved that Israel cannot live in peace. He said that recognition of the occupying regime will never bring peace to Palestine and the Zionist regime cannot live without bloodshed.”

The Tehrani Jewish community or TJC exhorted many to participate:

“massively in the International Qods Day rallies. Qods day is a sign of love and interest, of the followers of divine religions, in holy Qods, that is respected by all monotheists.”

Interior Minister Hojjatoleslam Mostafa Pour- Mohammadi said:

“all Muslims are expected to take part in the International Qods Day rallies for the sake of unity and integrity of Muslims in defense of the Palestinian nation.”

Last but certainly not least, especially on this first annual International Day of Non-Violence, the Islamic Republic Army on Tuesday condemned the "usurper" Zionists' crimes in occupied Palestine and said they will take part in the International Qods Day rallies on October 5. A statement reported by IRNA read:

"After lapse of six decades from establishment of the Zionist regime and the entity's ambitious objectives, the concept of cancerous tumor, attributed to the usurper regime, has become more evident to all."

May efforts to appreciate and celebrate this first annual day of non-violence lend itself to the Islamic Republic army as:

“the occupying regime of Qods' threat goes far beyond Palestine, Lebanon and even the Middle East but the US and western states do not show any reaction to the clandestine nuclear activities of the occupying regime.”

Oh yeah, and Obama is working to “urge elimination of nuclear weapons….”

Failures of the UN Human Rights Council

From Anne Bayefsky at National Review Online:

"When the Council was first created a new “universal periodic review” (UPR) mechanism — to permit the examination of human rights in every state starting with current members — was touted as a serious part of its duties. Only real human-rights promoters would want to withstand the heat of three-hour conversations once every five years and so it would act as an incentive to keep the bad guys off. At this Council session they agreed on a timetable to conduct reviews. Guess what? Israel — with a snowball’s chance in hell of ever being on the Council — was among the first to be reviewed. Current members and human-rights enthusiasts Saudi Arabia, China, Cuba, Russia, and Azerbaijan come later. Iran is three years away. And Syria, Sudan, and Zimbabwe are in 2011. If they play their cards right, they can run for office in 2008 and rotate off the Council before the review even gets around to them.

Resolutions adopted Friday included stalwarts from the Council’s discredited predecessor, the Human Rights Commission — “human rights and international solidarity” and “human rights and unilateral coercive measures” — the usual nonsense aimed straight at the West and all values democratic.

There was a dandy resolution on the Durban II racism conference — the newest U.N. forum for anti-semites from around the world being planned for 2009. The resolution calls for the Libyan Chair of the Preparatory Committee to come to
New York to present a report in person to the General Assembly. (Distributing the written report is not good enough.) The cost of the visit? $8,400 according to the Secretariat — for a 15-30 minute presentation. In case you were wondering, American taxpayers will pay 22 percent of those costs.

Then there were lots of resolutions on racism — all designed to bring hysterical accusations of Islamophobia and dastardly cartoons to the fore. In line with the sponsors’ genuine concern for religious discrimination,
Pakistan objected to “Jewish holidays” being used as a pretext for violating the human rights of Palestinians.

At the insistence of the OIC, a new clause has become de rigueur for the mandate of every investigator on every human rights subject, country-oriented or thematic. The provision imposes a code of conduct which threatens to seriously interfere with their independence,

My personal favorite was the Egyptian-led resolution, entitled “From rhetoric to reality: a global call for concrete action against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.” Adopted over the negative votes of all Western and Eastern European democracies, who are totally outnumbered in the Council, it

decides that the future agenda of the Intergovernmental Working Group will focus on the following paramount issues…re-aligning the work and name of the Anti-Discrimination Unit in the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights…and that, henceforth, this Unit shall be known as “The Anti-Racial Discrimination Unit,” and that its operational activities shall focus exclusively on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, as defined in…the Durban Declaration.

In other words, for anybody who has any idea of talking about anything but Islamophobia, you’re days are numbered.

In the meantime, the day-to-day camaraderie of the UN Human Rights Council proved a comfortable place to express the following sentiments:

Egypt: “…the offensive publication of portraits of the Prophet Mohamed…has highlighted the damage that freedom of speech if left unchecked may lead to, not only hurting the religious feelings of more than a billion people, but also their freedom of religion and their right for respect of their religion.”

Pakistan, on behalf of the OIC: “…terrorist acts carried out by non-state actors, in the name of religion, should be de-linked from religion to ensure freedom of religion for the peaceful followers of that faith.”

Pakistan, on behalf of the OIC: “The international community must address the root causes of terrorism, such as the situations of grave injustice and repression involving Muslims, and conditions of poverty and lack of opportunity, which fuel extremism and terrorism.”

Syria: “Freedom of opinion had been utilized to humiliate Islam and to cause hatred and instigate violence.”

Bangladesh: “…freedom of expression…cannot be absolute nor infinite. It must be exercised with respect and responsibility…”

Iran: “…the right to freedom of expression is not absolute.”

Pakistan, on behalf of the OIC: “Islamophobia is also a crude form of anti-Semitism.”

Algeria: “…there is an upswing in anti-Semitism that now targets Arabs… and Muslims.”"

Mr. Abemadinejad Speaks; a one man play; with chorus

What critics are saying about “Speaks”

“Ahmadinejad scored many points in his speech at Columbia on Monday”

    "the victim of an ambush"

From “Mr. Abe Madinejad Speaks,” a one man play; with chorus:

    (narrator) Ostinato Polytonality Editorial:

“(W)e are dismayed by the behavior of some of New York’s democratically elected representatives who denounced and threatened Columbia University for inviting the Iranian leader to speak there yesterday.

    (slowly begin raise lights)

(continue, gains timbre): “We can imagine no better way to give hope to opponents of Iran’s repressive state than by showcasing America’s democracy and commitment to free speech. And we can imagine no better way to lay bare the bankruptcy of Mr. Ahmadinejad’s views than to have him speak, and be questioned, at a university forum.”

    Recapitulation

CUE: etude legato evening meadow melody

CUE – fog machine – talent on riser

(raise lights Max. upstage center, rear talent)

(narrator) Scene is set: “Distortion of Politics:”

“The Iranian president is routinely demonized in the United States for allegedly “denying the Holocaust” and calling for the “destruction of Israel.” Ahmadinejad has also been criticized for oppressing Iranian citizens, persecuting women and dissidents including members of the Bahai’ faith and homosexuals.

President Bush has used Ahmadinejad and Iran as a distraction to redirect American anger from the lies he used to justify invading Iraq and the increasing American casualties.”

Cue talent – stage center – lights on, nobody home:

“We are against nuclear weapons. We do not accept it and even believe that the big powers should be disarmed of nuclear weapons.”

“The differences between Shia and Sunni Muslims have been created by enemies.”

Iran and the United States could be good friends

    Recapitulation

Unfortunately we are witnessing the bitter truth that some powers do not value any nation or human beings, and the only things that matter to them are themselves

INTERMISSION those that think only of themselves?

Germany's richest state agreed Tuesday to build the country's first commercial high-speed magnetic levitation train line, but officials warned the price tag could be heftier than first thought.”

    ACT II

-talent raises arms, CUE lights on lone tear:

"Unfortunately human rights are being extensively violated by certain powers, especially by those who pretend to be their exclusive advocates"

"In the present tumultuous world and predominance of loud outcries, threats and tensions, and in the time when the big powers are unable to solve the present problems, when mistrust in regional and international arenas is on the rise, when psychological security of societies is being targeted by an onslaught of political and propaganda designs, and disappointment prevails over efficacy of policies and actions of the international organizations in establishing of durable peace and security, and the protection of human rights is being weakened."

One Small Step for the Left; Giant Propaganda Coup for Iran

"We believe that sustainable peace does not mean to impose tranquility. We believe that the world can be run much more better than the present situation. We can avoid wars, threats, bloodshed and hostilities." – Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

"We do not take these statements seriously. Comments to the media are different from real statements" - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

“The fact of the matter is that one of the purposes of suspension — keeping them from getting the knowledge — has been overtaken by events.” - IAEA Director el Baradei

Did you know that the concern of Iran suspending its uranium enrichment is an “old issue?” Well, yes of course it is as negotiations have been going on for years. But, did you know that Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini during a weekly “press conference” commenting on the “possibility of Iran suspending its enrichment activities said:

"This is an old issue. Even the International Atomic Energy Agency chief ElBaradei has admitted that the issue of suspension is an old matter; suspension has no place in Iran's peaceful nuclear policies. We should talk of new initiatives and remove outstanding issues based on this framework."

Forget that nothing of any substance has been done to allay concerns that their nuclear intentions are peaceful; it’s old news…Iran is perfectly happy using the actions and/or statements of others to plow right on through as though they have done so much. El Baradei’s previous remarks (and likely, future remarks) are good fodder for the propaganda machine of a nation like Iran. Speaking of others actions/remarks being good fodder; the invitation to Columbia University is good propaganda….so is reaction to the invitation; regarding Ahmadinejad speaking before an audience at Columbia University, the spokesman said (surprise!!!):

"Despite US efforts to sabotage the program, we are trying to make it anyway."

Thanks Columbia for exemplifying Robert Frost’s “a liberal is a man too broad minded to take his own side in a quarrel.

  • Sick, Gary and Why Mahmoud Speaks at Columbia

Dr. Gary Sick is the driving force behind the invitation to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at Columbia University, according to Hassan Daioleslam at American Chronicle:

Iran's President Mahmood Ahmadinejad is scheduled to speak at Columbia University on Monday September 24th. This arrangement is not accidental. The event would have not been possible without the tireless and focused efforts of the well known Tehran advocate Dr. Gary Sick, an influential figure in Columbia.”

From Realite EU an offering of utterances from the Iranian leader:

    Religious extremism and martyrdom:

"We don't shy away from declaring that Islam is ready to rule the world.“ 1

"The wave of the Islamist revolution will soon reach the entire world." 2

"Our revolution's main mission is to pave the way for the reappearance of the Twelfth Imam, the Mahdi." 3

“Soon Islam will become the dominating force in the world, occupying first place in the number of followers amongst all other religions.” 4

“Is there a craft more beautiful, more sublime, more divine, than the craft of giving yourself to martyrdom and becoming holy? Do not doubt, Allah will prevail, and Islam will conquer mountain tops of the entire world.” 5

"What is important is that they have shown the way to martyrdom which we must follow.'' 6 [President Ahmadinejad’s comments on an aircraft crash in Tehran that killed 108 people in December 2005].

Ahmadinejad praises Iran for being able to recruit thousands of suicide bombers a day. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad praised his country's ability to recruit "hundreds of suicide bombers a day," saying "suicide is an invincible weapon. Suicide bombers in this land showed us the way, and they enlighten our future.“ Amadinejad said the will to commit suicide was "one of the best ways of life." 7

“This regime (Israel) will one day disappear.” 8

“The Zionist regime is a rotten, dried tree that will be eliminated by one storm.” 9

Israel is "a disgraceful stain on the Islamic world" 10

Israel is doomed to be "wiped from the map" in "a war of destiny." 11

Ahmadinejad said that "the countdown for the destruction of Israel" has begun. 12

Zionists are „the personification of Satan.“ 13

"In the case of any unwise move by the fake regime of Israel, Iran's response will be so destructive and quick that this regime will regret its move for ever." 14

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared that the Holocaust is a “myth.” 15

“Them (the West) invented the myth of the massacre of the Jews and placed it above Allah, religions and prophets.” 16

Iran, its nuclear ambitions and sanctions:

“By the grace of Allah, we (will be) a nuclear power.” 17

Ahmadinejad fired off a fresh barrage of warnings to the United Nations, saying Iran did "not give a damn" about demands to freeze sensitive nuclear work. 18

"Iran does not give a damn about resolutions." 19

"The Islamic republic of Iran has the capacity to quickly become a world superpower. If we believe in ourselves... no other power can be compared to us.“ 20

"Iran's enemies know your courage, faith and commitment to Islam and the land of Iran has created a powerful army that can powerfully defend the political borders and the integrity of the Iranian nation and cut off the hand of any aggressor and place the sign of disgrace on their forehead." 21

"Our enemies should know that they are unable to even slightly hurt our nation and they cannot create the tiniest obstacle on its glorious and progressive way." 22

“In parallel to the official political war there is a hidden war going on and the Islamic states should benefit from their economic potential to cut off the hands of the enemies.” 23

How Far We’ve Come Since Giuliani had Arafat Escorted from Lincoln Center

Not new news as of today, but speaks to the ridiculousness of some politicians, in this instance the role of “path to peace runs through Damascus” is played by Mayor of NYC, Michael Bloomberg rather than Pelosi:

In a move that has stunned New York, the Bloomberg administration is in discussions to escort the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to ground zero during his visit to New York next week.”

Ahmadinejad requests a visit to Ground Zero to lay a wreath at the location in a gesture of peace while on a visit to speak at the UN prior to the possibility of further sanctions being laid like a wreath at his feet.

Some reactions from a couple of Presidential candidates, heard by now:

"Can you imagine the audacity, the shocking nerve, the chutzpah to suggest he would visit ground zero, the handiwork of terrorists of the very kind he supports?" - Romney

"This is a man who has made threats against America and Israel, is harboring bin Laden's son and other al-Qaida leaders, is shipping arms to Iraqi insurgents and is pursuing the development of nuclear weapons. Assisting Ahmadinejad in touring Ground Zero _ hallowed ground for all Americans _ is outrageous" – Giuliani

We haven’t always been carpets to walk on; at times I guess we will again, but at others perhaps not.

Seth Leibsohn from The Corner at NRO:

“The NYSUN is reporting " In a move that has stunned New York, the Bloomberg administration is in discussions to escort the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to Ground Zero during his visit to New York next week, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said today. The Iranian mission to the U.N. made the request to the New York City Police Department and the Secret Service, who will jointly oversee security during the president's two-day visit. Mr. Ahmadinejad is scheduled to arrive September 24 to speak to the U.N. General Assembly as the Security Council decides whether to increase sanctions against Iran for its uranium enrichment program."

How far we've come. Rudy Giuliani, when he was mayor, had Yasser Arafat escorted out of
Lincoln Center, and was right to do so—he didn't consider ways to make Arafat's visit comfortable.

There is a debate of sorts as to whether the U.N. can legally deny a visa to a head of state such as Ahmadinejad. We denied Arafat a visa in 1988 under the fiction that he was not a head of state. But what about our states? Anyone remember 1983 and how two Governors, Tom Kean and Mario Cuomo, of
New Jersey and New York handled their duties? They denied Soviet landing rights in their states as a result of the USSR shooting down KAL 007.

As the U.N. screamed over this lese majeste, threatening to deny the
U.S. as home to the U.N., the late Ambassador Charles Lichenstein took it just fine, saying: "We will put no impediment in your way. The members of the U.S. mission to the United Nations will be down at the dockside waving you a fond farewell as you sail off into the sunset."

How I miss the days when city, state, and national leaders took terrorism as seriously as they used to.”

The Fruits of Four Years of Investigation and Negotiation: Iran and the IAEA

According to the 27 nation European Union regarding the latest IAEA negotiated deal with Iran over its “peaceful nukes:”

Iran's nuclear transparency deal with U.N. inspectors could be a recipe for delay and the lack of provision for suspending Tehran's uranium enrichment is unacceptable”

This upset negotiator extraordinaire, IAEA Director Mohamed ElBaradei motivating him to walk out of the session.

A more negative stance held by EU “powers” Germany, France and Britain that are among six nations sponsoring “two sets of U.N. sanctions against Iran, said German Ambassador Klaus Peter Gottwald on behalf of the three:”

“We are ... concerned by the sequential nature of the work plan as it may possibly be used to delay the clarification of the outstanding questions.”

Iran delay? This latest round of “negotiations” grew from the olive branch that was offered by Iran in June that got the diplomatic likes of El Baradei and others excited. At the time it reeked of more Iranian delay games and only three months later the EU is catching on.

It was at about this time that Dr. El Baradei quipped about sanctions and the goal of Iranian suspension of its enrichment activities:

‘“the fact of the matter is that one of the purposes of suspension — keeping them from getting the knowledge — has been overtaken by events.”’

What about the session upset El Baradei so much that he felt compelled to walk out? According to AFP, the EU speech “did not fully support his deal for new inspections in Iran.”

Could the “concern” expressed by German Ambassador Gottwald have been the “nasty statement” that ruffled the feathers of the Director?

El Baradei had received a “rousing statement” on the deal from the “non-aligned movement” led by Cuban Ambassador Norma Miguelina Goicochea Estenoz that reiterated:

“its full confidence in the impartiality and professionalism of the Secretariat of the IAEA and its Director General, Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei."

A diplomat pointed to a lack in this “same personal tone of appreciation,” from the EU as a “rebuff to his sustained diplomatic efforts.”

Sustained diplomatic efforts should be better described as only sustained employment for the Director and others in the diplomatic corps. The dividends returned to date on this investment have been paid to Iran and Iran alone. Is this the result that rates a “personal tone of appreciation?”

Four years, that allows the smile to remain on the faces of those in Tehran. Iranian Oil Minister Gholamhossein Nozari said the:

“proactive cooperation" of Iran "is an essential step towards a peaceful resolution of the nuclear issue."

Well, then “the impartiality and professionalism of the Secretariat of the IAEA and its Director General, Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei” is just what is needed.

    Durban II; It Ain't Dick!

In an opinion/essay follow up to Saturday’s post “UN Summit: Boycott Israel” posted by Basti comes this from Anne Bayefsky at NRO, “Durban II; the coming “anti-racist” spectacle.”

“Last Friday in Geneva, the U.N. launched a two-year plan which will culminate in a full-throated anti-American and anti-Israel world conference on racism in 2009. Modeled on the notorious 2001 Durban “anti-racism” conference, Durban II similarly promises to attract terrorist sympathizers and anti-Semites from around the globe. The spectacle of last week’s planning session might be described as the theater of the absurd, except that the check handed to the American taxpayer for 22 percent of the costs was very real.”

The UN has many different offices that work toward “peace” on earth, one of which is the “powerful” Security Council, however, with all the interest groups that help direct government on the planet the Security Council doesn’t hold the propaganda sway that others do.

Consider the “Human Rights Council,” the lead instigator in the revisiting Durban I and serving as the preparatory committee (PredCom) for Durban II:

“At its third session, the Human Rights Council in its resolution 3/2 decided that the Human Rights Council will act as the Preparatory Committee for the Durban Review Conference which shall be open to the participation of all Member States of the United Nations and members of the specialized agencies and also to the participation of observers in accordance with the established practice of the General Assembly. It further decided that at its organizational sessions the Preparatory Committee shall elect, on the basis of equitable geographic representation, a bureau for the Preparatory Committee and that, at the same session, the Preparatory Committee shall decided on all the relevant modalities for the Conference in accordance with established practice of the General Assembly, including deciding on the objectives of the Review Conference, the level at which the Review Conference shall be convened, regional preparatory initiatives, date and venue.”

    According to Bayefsky:

“On the first day of the session the PrepCom elected Libya as its chair, Cuba as rapporteur, and Iran as a member of its executive — to plan a conference about human rights.”

The Organization of the Islamic Conference or OIC (for entertainment purposes glance at some of the OIC news on its homepage) holds the majority of seats on the African and Asian regional groups, so it effectively is in charge in the quest to guide the world in recognizing and doing something about human rights.

Some of the PrepCom’s issues it would like to and very likely will include are:

    • adopting objectives far beyond the original idea of a “Durban review conference”;
    • creating another U.N. committee to prepare for Durban II;
    • issuing special participation invitations only to the U.N. investigators (rapporteurs) on racism and Islamophobia, and freedom of religion;
    • adopting new rules of procedure especially designed for the Conference;
    • introducing vetting for a pre-conference questionnaire that might have asked potentially intrusive questions of states about actual protection from discrimination;
    • paying for the Durban II preparations from the U.N.’s regular budget (that is the West); and
    • allowing every NGO that participated in Durban I to participate in Durban II unless objections were made in just 14 days.

These are pretty cute when you take a look at them and fall pretty much in line with any UN led initiative including the usual lack of accountability that defines the “austere” body. Rather than pacify, members of this committee are those that enflamed Islamic sensibilities during the “InkQuisition.”

The unrecognized war of civilizations continues with the usual suspects in the UN in the lead.
